UK Games Expo 2017

UK Games Expo 2017

Postby nclarke » Mon Dec 05, 2016 9:00 am

Entry tickets have recently gone on sale for this con being held at the NEC in Birmingham UK in June (2nd - 4th). A 3 day adult ticket is £28 so it's not badly priced but the nearby hotels have found out that some popular band are playing that same weekend nearby so room prices have gone through the roof. Luckily there are lots of choices in the area and with a rail station with 5-10 minutes and regular trains to New Street station in Birmingham cheaper accommodation should be possible.

Event tickets are not on sale yet as the page for GM's to sign up hasn't been set up yet. I expect to run five games over the weekend, at least one of which is usually a RQ6/Mythras game. In the past couple of years I've run Caves of the Circind from Mythic Britain and a homebrew sword and sorcery game. This time it could be something from the soon to be released Saxon book or something from Mythic Rome.

I didn't realise that this was an Exhibition and a Games Convention.

When I have been before, I have only gone to the Exhibition.

How does the Convention work then? It isn't a residential one like Continuum or Eternalcon, so do people stay in nearby hotels and then visit and play games whenever they want?

I live in Birmingham, so it is only one bus ride and one train journey to get there, so staying at home and going to the con should be pretty easy for me.

Do you have to pay for all RPG sessions? What about unofficial ones that have on-the-day signups?

I am hoping to go to demo Merrie England:Robyn Hode for Revolution, but would hope to do a bit more than that and play a few games as well.

The Hilton Metropole is the main hotel and is where the RPG sessions are located. There is also a largish Pathfinder presence and a specific area for those gamers. Attendees stay in any of the nearby hotels and there is a extensive RPG program and has been for years. Effectively 3 RPG sessions a day for 3 days held in various locations in the Hilton Metropole. GM's get to offer scheduled games around February/March and attendees then sign up when the games open for attendees. Cost has been 3 pounds per game per player paid at time of booking, could still be that in 2017. There are no ad-hoc games offered although there's little to stop folks grabbing people and a table - on fact the board gamers do it and often have to be chased away from rooms allocated to RPG's. Likelihood of just turning up and offering games is negligible, you'd have to pitch them on the UKGE website to get the space.

If Revolution has a stand and space you could run short demos there in the Expo halls but stand space isn't cheap and they may not cough up enough for the table frontage needed to both demo and sell stuff.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Hmmm, definitely not what I am used to.

It's much like the recent Dragonmeets in London. These cons use a hotel at the center and allocate their larger meeting space to trade halls and smaller meeting rooms for RPGs and board games. The traders often have demo space, as Aeon did last weekend, to allow a few players a quick 30 minute or so intro to their game at the stand. In 2017 I hear that Expo will have two of the big halls for trade and some of the board game competitions (in the past they've used a marquee) and leave the RPGs in the Metropole. (I'd heard that the W.I. have grabbed one of the bigger ballrooms limiting the amount of space at the hotel making the board game competitions harder to host hence the move to the halls).

Right I've submitted my Mythic Rome game for this con. Games are going live for players to sign up at 7pm UK time this evening. The number of games is less than previous years as GM submissions have only been open a month and the release to the public is earlier than usual leading to a rush of GM's posting games this weekend. Not all of these will be approved by the time game bookings open so it will be well worth checking back fairly frequently to see if something new has been approved during the next few weeks. In previous years games have trickled in over the months before the con and even if all the games you are interested in are full other games open up a bit later.
