BROCH GRODDATH IS COMING...

Postby Matt_E » Tue Sep 13, 2016 8:30 pm

Well, I've gone and done it. In a few days (as soon as details on DriveThruRPG have been sorted), the Mythras scenario below will be available for your delectation.

BROCH GRODDATH
A Mythras adventure
by Matthew Eager

The adventurers are hired to find an unusual object that is believed to be among the collections of a strange, disgraced family, in a great home that is shunned. The item is indeed there, as are clues about the family and its fall...and worse things...

BROCH GRODDATH is a “haunted house” scenario, with its own defining twists. Its key features are creepy atmosphere, disorientation, and horror. It touches on several genres and themes, including Low Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery, Cosmic Horror, and Dungeon Crawling. A fantasy milieu is assumed, but with moderate changes it could be played in a modern Lovecraftian setting.

This is intended as a one-shot adventure, to be dropped into an existing campaign, without larger implications (unless desired). Probably two sessions are needed to play it out. The scenario is written for four adventurers, but three or five should be fine. Four sample characters are included, for an instant start to a weekend’s fun.

Mechanical details have been constructed using the Mythras game system from The Design Mechanism. The write-up should translate well to other d100-style rules (and still other systems, with more work).

There are plenty of points for adaptation, to make this adventure unique to your game. What will your BROCH GRODDATH be like? Download the FREE TASTER and start plotting…

Initial feedback has been positive. Check it out when you can!

Sounds nice.

My current city has a devastated, ruined old manor shunned by the inhabitants. This may be it.

Thanks, Hannu, and everyone else who has checked it out! I would very much like to hear how it plays in your game. As the teaser says, "What will your Broch Groddath be like?"

The goal was to try to write something at once familiar yet quirky, a one-shot yet easily meshed with a bigger game (and possibly even giving some starters for more adventures), and mixing genres. My tastes tend to lean toward horror, though my milieu is always fantasy.

I don't use any special rules, although you could use the alternate Tenacity rules (page 139, especially the boxed text) much as Call of Cthulhu uses SAN: Once you're out, your character is beyond your control, until restored to sanity. I think Tenacity is a standard feature in Luther Arkwright.

As I say, I run a standard fantasy game; it's just that I tend to have horror themes and moments in mind when I write scenarios. :)

Regarding panic and fright reactions, I think you could handle almost anything by modeling an effect with the existing rules for the spells Demoralize, Fear, Madness, Mindblast, and the creature traits Intimidating and Terrifying. You might also want to consider the Disease and Poison Conditions, especially Paralysis and Unconsciousness, tabulated on page 75. Just choose the effect you want, and decide what sort of skill check (probably an Opposed Test) is required to resist it.

If you're planning to run Broch Groddath, the mechanics I chose for that scenario are all laid out, and the scenario calls for many such checks...
